girls' night out (literally)
Wendy and I got up to the campgrounds around 9:00 last night...and no one was there!!! My car was the only car in the lot for the hike-in sites. It was insane. There were two other registration slips in the boxes, but no other people. Well, except this one guy we passed going down the trail which was weird because he was alone and didn't have a flashlight and there were no other cars out there - but we didn't pay too much mind to it.
They have finally put new signs up at the little trails that go back to the campsites off of the main trail. They are nice - metal (so people can't knock them down and use them for firewood) with reflective numbers for the sites.
We set up the little tent since it was just us for the night then went back out to the car for the rest of our stuff. The ranger guy stopped by as we were unloading and chatted with us a little. We talked about deer and raccoons and mountain lions and bobcats. Then we headed back down the trail with the rest of our stuff and passed that guy - again. It was much weirder the second time. We were sure to keep the Maglite close to us the rest of the night - I'm pretty sure that thing could kill someone if hit in the head hard enough with it!
And anyone who's ever been out with me knows that I am still scared of the dark...not so much the dark itself, but what may be in the dark. Every twig snap and I need to shine the flashlight around to make sure nothing is there. Well folks, it's almost fall....the acorns and hickory nuts are falling. Constantly. I'm sure the sight was quite amusing until I got used to it and we settled into camp.
We got all our stuff back to the site in two trips, lit our own fire, and sat out just us girls talking about everything (mostly guys). We drank a few drinks and finally had to go out in the timber for wood because the two bundles we bought ran out fast. Finally went to bed around 1am. I froze last night (didn't have socks) and had weird deams when I did sleep. We woke up around 7 this morning and were quite loud talking and laughing before we got out of the tent - and when we did there were two deer standing right there - they were cute. There were a bunch more on the way down the trail. I got to work at 8:30. Can't wait to get back up there tonight!
